Arthritis drugs triple cancer risk
Rheumatoid arthritis patients taking Humira or Remicade face triple the risk of developing several kinds of cancer and double the risk of getting serious infections, a study led by the Mayo Clinic found.
The analysis builds on previous reports about the risks associated with Abbott Laboratories Humira and Centocor’s Remicade. But the earlier research focused mostly on one kind of cancer – lymphoma – and infections such as tuberculosis and pneumonia.
The new study found an apparent link to other cancers, too, including skin, gastrointestinal, breast and lung tumors. It also quantifies the risks and says high doses appear to be the riskiest.
While the drugs packaging information mentions some of the risks the manufacturers said the new study does not prove that the medication is at fault, and they said the research was flawed.
Study co-author Dr. Eric Matteson, a Mayo Clinic rheumatologist, stressed the overall chances of developing cancer while using these drugs is still small. The researchers also noted that the medications benefits include improving flexibility and range of movement, easing pain and increasing life expectancy, which arthritis can shorten.
In addition, the researchers noted that the risks for individual patients probably vary widely.
Side-effects of treatment with Methotrexate as listed by the manufacturer and reported in Martindale Complete Drug Reference, 32nd Edition, page 547:
“The most common toxic effects of Methotrexate are on bone marrow and gastro-intestinal tract. Bone marrow depression can occur abruptly and leucopenia, thrombocytopenia and anaemia may all occur. Megaloblastic anaemia has also been reported. Ulceration of the mouth and gastro-intestinal disturbances are signs of early toxicity and haemorrhagic enteritis, intestinal perforation and death may follow.
Methotrexate therapy is associated with liver damage, both acute and, more seriously, chronic. Hepatic fibrosis and cirrhosis may develop without obvious signs of hepatotoxicity and may lead to eventual death.
Other adverse reactions include renal failure and tubular necrosis; pulmonary reactions include life-threatening interstitial lung disease, skin reactions, alopecia, osteoporosis, arthralgia, myalgia, ocular irritation and precipitation of diabetes…
Methotrexate may cause defective oogenesis and spermatogenesis and fertility may be permanently impaired. Like other folate inhibitors it is teratogenic and can cause foetal death.
Lymphomas are associated with low-dose methotrexate therapy for rheumatic disorders and transitional cell bladder cancer has also been associated with this therapy…”
However most treatments used today inhibit the function of the immune system. This will further impair the patient. What we do is correct the immune function which upon being accomplished will heal the patient.
